Үйлену той / Келін түсіру, Беташар
Wedding toi with Betashar
Meaning
The wedding toi (also called kelin tusiru, "bringing in the bride") is when the bride is welcomed into the groom's family. Its heart is Betashar, "opening the face", a poetic introduction of the new daughter-in-law to her husband's relatives.
What happens
- 1
Guests gather at the groom's family home or a banquet hall.
- 2
Betashar begins: a singer or toastmaster performs improvised verses introducing the veiled bride to the groom's relatives one by one.
- 3
The bride bows to each relative as they are named; relatives offer gifts or money in return.
- 4
The veil is lifted and the bride is officially welcomed into the family.
- 5
A large feast follows, led by a toastmaster (asaba), with toasts, speeches, music, games and dancing late into the night.
Your role as a guest
Witness Betashar, join the feast and the dancing. Guests from abroad are sometimes invited to give a short toast.
