Meaning

Nauryz marks the spring equinox and the start of the new year. It is a celebration of renewal, generosity and open hospitality, when doors are open and no guest leaves hungry.

What happens

1. 1

   The family prepares nauryz kozhe, a soup of seven ingredients, each symbolising a blessing such as health, prosperity or wisdom.

2. 2

   Relatives and neighbours visit each other's homes to share food and good wishes.

3. 3

   The family sets a festive dastarkhan (table) with baursak, meat dishes, sweets and tea.

4. 4

   In cities and villages there are public festivities with music, yurts and traditional games.
