We are a big family living at the foot of the Zailiysky Alatau. Aizhan teaches English at a school, her husband Nurlan is an engineer, and three generations share our home. We love long evenings over tea and sharing the stories of our grandparents.
Message the hostThe family's story
Alikhan took his first steps in December, right between the sofa and his grandmother's arms. His great-grandfather will cut the cord. Aizhan teaches English and would love for her students' future pen pals to see how Kazakh families celebrate the small moments too.

About this tradition
Тұсау кесу
Tusau kesu celebrates a child's first independent steps, usually around their first birthday. Cutting the cord that loosely ties the child's legs symbolises freeing them to walk confidently through life.
